Japan Court Recognizes AI-Created Naked Girl Images as Child Porn

On June 5, 2026, the Nagoya District Court sentenced Shota Suito, a 35-year-old former elementary school teacher, to three years and six months in prison for possessing AI-generated images of naked girls, among other offenses, in violation of Japan's law against child prostitution and pornography. This case marks the first instance in Japan where the law has been applied to the possession of AI-generated sexual deepfakes.

Prosecutors had sought a six-year prison sentence for Suito. The court recognized that the images were created using generative artificial intelligence based on photos of students, which were sent to another member of a group of seven elementary and junior high school teachers. These teachers are believed to have shared secretly filmed images of girls on social media.

Judge Takaaki Matsumoto acknowledged the severity of the offense, emphasizing the exploitation of technology to produce illicit content.
