New Zealand Enacts Comprehensive Firearms Legislation

Parliament has passed the Arms Act 2026, replacing the previous 1983 legislation, to enhance public safety and regulate firearms use. Key changes include:

  • Mandatory consideration of personal and public safety in firearms regulation.
  • Disqualification of gang members from obtaining firearms licenses.
  • Increased penalties for firearms-related offenses.
  • Establishment of Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand as an independent regulator.

Most provisions will take effect on 23 September 2026, with certain requirements phased in by 2028.
