State Confronts K500 Million in Legal Claims Due to Poor Case Management

The Papua New Guinea government is grappling with nearly K500 million in legal claims resulting from inadequately defended court cases and insufficient coordination among state agencies.

Current Situation

Solicitor General George Akia highlighted the escalating number of successful claims against the State, attributing it to poor case management and lack of early coordination between government agencies and state lawyers. This financial burden underscores the need for immediate reforms within the Office of the Solicitor General.

Initiatives and Responses

In response, the Office has launched a client outreach program, with the Highlands Region hosting its first session in Mt Hagen from May 26 to 27, 2026. The program gathered heads of government agencies, including Police, Correctional Services, Provincial Health Authorities, Provincial Administration, and the Department of Works and Highways, aiming to improve communication and strengthen State representation in legal matters.

Implications

The substantial financial liabilities highlight the urgent need for enhanced legal strategies and inter-agency collaboration to mitigate future claims and safeguard public funds.
