Tajikistan to Pardon 18,000 Convicts Ahead of Independence Anniversary

On June 16, 2026, President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan signed the "On Amnesty" law in commemoration of the country's 35th anniversary of independence. This legislation will result in the release or sentence reduction of over 18,000 convicted individuals.

Specifically, 11,305 individuals will be released from prisons, correctional institutions, or from serving other non-custodial sentences. The remaining 6,733 will have their prison terms reduced. The law provides special consideration for women and minors: out of 507 women currently serving sentences, 248 will be released, and the sentences of 259 will be reduced. Similarly, of the 134 juveniles serving sentences, 99 will be released, and 35 will have their terms reduced.

The amnesty also extends to individuals whose cases are under judicial proceedings, investigation, or verification. Relevant authorities are mandated to implement the law within two months and report back to the President.
