Human Rights Watch Calls for Independent Forensic Services in Rio de Janeiro

Human Rights Watch has urged Ricardo Couto, the acting governor of Rio de Janeiro, to pass legislation that would establish fully independent forensic services in the state. The call comes in response to repeated failures by the civil police, who currently oversee forensic work, which have undermined justice and fueled impunity.

The organization highlighted that the lack of independence in forensic investigations has led to compromised evidence and hindered the prosecution of crimes, particularly those involving police misconduct. By placing forensic services under the control of an independent body, the integrity and impartiality of investigations can be better ensured.
