Libya's Central Bank Governor Leads Anti-Money Laundering Meeting
The Central Bank of Libya (CBL) convened the first regular meeting of the National Committee for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing (AML/CFT) for 2026 on April 9, 2026. Chaired by CBL Governor Naji Mohammed Issa, the session included representatives from various governmental, judicial, security, and supervisory bodies.
The committee reviewed progress on the National Strategy for Combating Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing and discussed outcomes from the High Committee for the National Risk Assessment's initial meeting. Preparations for an upcoming mutual evaluation were also addressed, highlighting concerns over the non-adoption of a draft law on AML/CFT. The absence of this legislation poses risks to Libya's financial and economic systems due to the lack of alignment with international standards.
Decisions were made to enhance preventive controls and protect the financial system, aligning with the CBL's reform policies. This meeting underscores Libya's commitment to strengthening its financial regulatory framework and addressing international compliance requirements.
