New Ombudsman João Manuel Francisco to Be Sworn In

On June 23, 2026, the President of the National Assembly, Adão Francisco Correia de Almeida, announced that João Manuel Francisco will be sworn in as the new Ombudsman on Wednesday, June 24, in the Noble Hall of the National Assembly in Luanda.

João Manuel Francisco was elected to the position during the éth Ordinary Plenary Meeting of the àth Legislative Session of the V Legislature, held on May 21, 2026. The investiture ceremony aligns with Article 212-A, paragraph 2, of the Constitution of the Republic of Angola, which stipulates that the Ombudsman takes office before the President of the National Assembly.

According to the Constitution, the Ombudsman serves a five-year term, renewable only once. The Ombudsman is responsible for defending the rights, freedoms, and guarantees of citizens, ensuring justice and legality in public administration.
