President Herminie Signs Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation Act

On July 9, 2026, President Patrick Herminie formally assented to the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) Act, 2026, at a ceremony held at State House. This landmark legislation establishes a renewed and strengthened legal framework for the nation's public broadcaster.

The ceremony was attended by Vice-President Sebastian Pillay, Speaker of the National Assembly Azarel Ernesta, Chief Justice Rony Govinden, President of the Court of Appeal Justice Anthony Fernando, and members of the SBC Board and management.

The SBC Act, 2026, replaces the existing legislative framework, introducing updated provisions anchored in the principles of separation of powers and institutional autonomy. The Act confers upon the Corporation a clear and unambiguous mandate, independent in its operation, comprehensive in its coverage, and firmly rooted in Seychelles' three national languages: Creole, English, and French.

Vice-President Pillay highlighted that the Act calls upon the SBC to nurture creative talent, engage all age groups within society, champion sports, and take deliberate steps to safeguard children within the community. It further mandates the Corporation to host debates and national dialogues that serve the public interest.

The Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation Act, 2026, comes into effect from the date of the President's assent, with transitional provisions to be implemented in the coming months as the Corporation aligns its governance structures with the requirements of the new legislation.

This development marks a significant step in enhancing the operational independence and effectiveness of the SBC, ensuring it continues to serve as a vital platform for information, education, and entertainment for the Seychellois public.
