Tonga's Parliament Approves 2026-27 Deficit Budget

The Legislative Assembly of Tonga has approved the national annual budget of $949.4 million pa'anga for the fiscal year 2026-2027. The budget, presented by Acting Minister for Finance and Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua, was passed with 20 votes during a late sitting on June 18, 2026. The budget comprises $735.2 million in cash and $214.2 million in in-kind assistance. This marks the first fiscal plan of the current government, guided by the theme: "Accelerate delivery of vital Government initiatives to generate sustainable, inclusive growth." The passage of the budget authorizes government expenditure for the upcoming financial year, enabling ministries and public agencies to implement planned programs and projects beginning July 1, 2026.
