Court to Deliver Verdict in Kecmanović Case on June 18

The Higher Court in Belgrade has scheduled the announcement of the verdict for Miljana and Vladimir Kecmanović, parents of the boy who committed the tragic shooting at Vladislav Ribnikar School on May 3, 2023, for June 18, 2026.

During the closing arguments, Chief Public Prosecutor Nenad Stefanović proposed maximum prison sentences: 14 years and 11 months for Vladimir Kecmanović and three years for Miljana Kecmanović. He emphasized that their negligence led to the deaths of ten individuals, leaving no mitigating circumstances.

The defense, represented by Irina and Borivoje Borović, argued that the charges were unsubstantiated and called for acquittal. Both defendants also presented their final statements, expressing their perspectives on the case.

Family members of the victims and their legal representatives delivered closing statements, highlighting the profound impact of the tragedy on their lives.

This retrial follows the Court of Appeal's annulment of the initial verdict, which had sentenced Vladimir Kecmanović to 14.5 years and Miljana Kecmanović to three years in prison. The appellate court mandated a new trial to reassess the evidence and arguments presented.

The case has garnered significant public attention, as it addresses parental responsibility in the context of juvenile crimes and the broader implications for legal accountability.
