Guinea-Bissau Enacts Law to Protect Children from Violence and Abuse

The Council of Ministers in Guinea-Bissau has approved a new decree-law establishing a Comprehensive Child Protection System. This initiative, presented by the Ministry of Women and Social Solidarity, aims to strengthen the legal framework for defending children's rights in the country.

The new legislation defines rules, principles, and coordination mechanisms among state institutions to ensure comprehensive protection for children. It focuses on preventing violence, abuse, neglect, exploitation, and discrimination against minors.

According to the Ministry's statement released on June 9, 2026, the system seeks to provide more effective and coordinated responses to situations of risk and vulnerability. The measure places the "best interests of the child" as the central principle guiding all public actions and decisions.

With this approval, Guinea-Bissau advances in implementing commitments from the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other regional and international instruments for child protection. The system will involve government bodies, development partners, civil society organizations, and communities.
