In December 2024, S03o Tomee03 and Preedncipe officially graduated from the category of least developed countries (LDCs). Following this milestone, the nation presented a comprehensive sustainable development strategy for 2026020400 and an Integrated National Financing Framework (INFF) in Brussels in December 2025.
This strategic roadmap positions the island nation as a structured partner for private investors, climate finance actors, and public-private partnership stakeholders. The plan focuses on four key sectors:
- Biodiversity: Leveraging its status as the first country entirely designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve to promote conservation and sustainable development.
- Blue Economy: Utilizing its expansive exclusive economic zone (EEZ) to develop sustainable fishing, marine sciences, and offshore renewable energy.
- Premium Cocoa: Capitalizing on the production of high-quality cocoa to create local value through premium chocolate and agrotourism.
- Ecotourism: Focusing on boutique hospitality and conservation-based tourism to preserve the nation's natural beauty and attract high-value visitors.
The strategy also emphasizes political stability as a foundation for sustainable development, highlighting the country's tradition of stable democracy and orderly transfers of power.
