Thailand suspends peace talks with southern insurgent group after deadly attack

Thailand has temporarily suspended peace talks with the southern insurgent group following a deadly attack in Narathiwat that resulted in the deaths of five rangers. The dialogue, initially scheduled for September in Malaysia, has been put on hold as authorities reassess the situation.

Director of the National Intelligence Agency, Thanat Suwannanont, stated that the peace process had been progressing well before the attack prompted a reevaluation. "There will be no negotiations in September. We had arranged the meeting in advance, but then the incident happened. The violence was too severe for us to accept. We were in the middle of talks when this happened," he told reporters.

Thanat, who also heads Thailand's Southern Border Provinces Peace Dialogue Panel, mentioned that the government has sent a letter to the insurgent group seeking an explanation for the attack, which occurred while the peace process was underway.

This suspension highlights the challenges in achieving lasting peace in Thailand's southern regions, where insurgent activities have persisted for years. The government's decision underscores the impact of recent violence on diplomatic efforts and the delicate nature of the peace process.
