Norwegian Government Proposes Increased Funding for Svalbard in Revised 2026 Budget

The Norwegian government has proposed an increase of 72.3 million kroner in the Svalbard budget as part of the revised national budget for 2026. This additional funding aims to support various initiatives, including the introduction of a capped electricity and district heating price for households and voluntary organizations in Longyearbyen, the administrative center of Svalbard.

Introduction of 'Svalbard Price' for Energy

To alleviate the financial burden on residents and organizations, the government plans to implement a 'Svalbard Price' for electricity and district heating. Under this scheme, electricity prices will be capped at a maximum of 1.2 NOK per kilowatt-hour, and district heating at 0.6 NOK per kilowatt-hour. This initiative is expected to cost 9.3 million kroner in 2026.
