Sweden Proposes New Law to Strengthen Child Protection

On July 1, 2026, the Swedish government presented a proposal for a new law aimed at enhancing the protection of children and young people. The proposed legislation seeks to replace the current law with two new acts: one concerning the care of children and young people, and another regarding special powers for state child and youth care. The reforms emphasize a stronger child rights perspective, ensuring that children are recognized as individual rights holders and that their voices are heard in matters affecting them. The proposal also aims to increase the stability and security for children placed in foster homes by allowing continued care in the same family home when strong bonds have been established. Additionally, the criteria for taking children into care are adjusted to better protect them from criminal environments and honor-related violence and oppression. The proposed changes are scheduled to come into effect on January 1, 2027, pending parliamentary approval.
